Get to Know Your Body

If you’re a pear-shaped woman, your hip section is wider than your upper body with most of your fat deposited around your thighs, hips and rears region. The good news is that the weight carried around your lower body is due to subcutaneous fat rather than the more dangerous visceral variety.
According to health professionals, pear-shaped women are significantly healthier than those with apple-shaped bodies because the fat deposited on the hips is less likely to travel around the body. This ultimately reduces the risk of heart disease, risk of stroke and diabetes. (Yay for us!)
With that said, carrying extra weight on the hips can increase the risk of osteoarthritis and cellulite. Additionally, scientific research has found that it may be more difficult for pear-shaped women to lose weight, as our upper body burns fat more readily than our lower body, including the hips and thighs. This means we have to work harder to lose weight once it has been gained.
Due to this accumulation of weight around the lower half of our bodies, we pear-shaped women also run an additional risk of higher estradiol levels, which increase the risk of estrogen-dominant conditions such as breast cancer. Due to this, pear-shaped women must monitor their fat intake closely, limit fat consumption and check their breasts monthly.

What Causes Us to be Pear-Shaped?
Having a pear-shaped body is closely linked to genetics; however, several other factors also play a role, including age, gender, pregnancy, hormonal status, and lifestyle behaviours.
How Can You Keep Your Body Healthy?
A build-up of subcutaneous fat is closely linked to physical activity (or the lack thereof) while over-development of reserve fat is often associated with dietary behaviours.
It is strongly recommended that pear-shaped women exercise with a focus on leg muscles to convert fat into muscle and reduce their risk of illness. In addition, we should choose higher-protein foods and lean meats while eating regularly to help stabilise blood sugar levels and mood.
