Is a Pear Shaped Body Healthy?
Our body shape says quite a bit about our physical health. However, do keep in mind that body shape is just one factor that may determine our overall health. Regardless of our shape and size, we can be healthy. Or it can also be an indicator if we are at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart disease.
But before we delve in deeper with this blog, we here at Pear Collections do not claim to be health or medical professionals. What we share here is based on research we aim to share with you. However, we encourage you to seek the opinions of medical and health professionals if you are concerned about your body type or health.
Pear Collections is in the business of providing pear-shaped women with clothing that fits their lovely curves. And we also advocate for women to develop a body-positive mindset, recognising that their bodies are beautiful and that they should be comfortable in their own skin, curves and all.

What causes my pear-shaped body?
Our bodies have their own way of distributing their own fats. Pear-shaped women are identified as having a smaller waist and having extra weight and fat in the hips, thighs, and bottom.
Pear-shaped folks are often women, thanks to the effects of the hormone estrogen. Estrogen, for example, leads the body to store fat in the lower body.
Other factors that determine a person’s body shape are also dictated by their own skeletal frame, bone structure, and genetic predisposition. Additionally, our genes determine how our bodies accumulate and store fat.
For example, your bone structure, frame size, where your body tends to store fat, and your metabolism are generally determined by your genetics. Whatever it is you do with your body type and what happens to it is entirely up to the healthy choices you make.
Regardless of your body shape, just remember: you are beautiful. There is no such thing as the perfect body shape, regardless of what others and the media may tell you.
The most important thing to have in mind is to stay happy and maintain physical health. If you have concerns about your body, including how it moves or how you feel, it is advisable to always talk to a healthcare provider, such as a doctor.
Is it healthy to have a pear-shaped body?
Regardless of body type or shape, we all have the propensity for fat accumulation. For women, being pear-shaped is better because it shows that our bodies can store fat to fulfil nutritional requirements needed before and during pregnancy.
According to Dr. Tsvetelina Velikova, MD, PhD, people who carry fat in their bottoms and hips, with less fat in the shoulders and bust are considered pear-shaped. She also stated that being pear-shaped is safer since fat stored in our legs has little potential of reaching vital organs.
Pear-shaped women are considered far healthier than other body types due to the distribution and concentration of fat in the lower abdomen. This, however, does not mean that this body type is automatically free of disease risk. This is because most degenerative diseases have various risk factors, mainly due to lifestyle choices.
You can still be at risk for cardiovascular diseases and other risk factors if you smoke, drink alcohol to excess, make unhealthy food choices and/or overindulge. Regardless of whether you’re pear-shaped or not, adopting a healthy lifestyle is necessary to prevent various degenerative diseases.
Although the benefits of a pear-shaped body are still debated, it is generally considered healthier, according to Harvard Health Publishing.
These fat cells, called gluteofemoral adipose tissues, absorb detrimental fatty acids that one obtains from ingested foods and remove them from your bloodstream. They are also responsible for producing beneficial chemicals for your body, like leptin and adiponectin.
Pear-shaped women naturally have larger thighs. You would be glad to know that, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal, women (including men) with larger thighs have additional protection against heart disease and premature death.
Although our fat concentration in our lower extremities places us at a lower risk of serious disease, do note that pear-shaped people are not immune to disease.
