What Causes a Pear-Shaped Body?
Has it ever happened to you that you see a killer dress in a shop, try it on, and find that it does not look all that flattering on you? I have, and that constant, horrible shopping experience resulted in my tears falling and cursing my petite, pear-shaped body.
My partner, who was with me the last time this happened, who knows my business development and fashion design background, said to me, “Then do something about it.” That realisation felt like a slap to my face, waking me from this shopping nightmare.
I can do something about it and fix the dilemma that pear-shaped women like me face with ill-fitting clothing from the racks of clothing shops. That is why I created Pear Collections: to celebrate, support, and promote a welcoming environment for Pear-Shaped Women everywhere.

What are Pear-Shaped Bodies?
Human bodies come in all shapes and sizes – and apparently, they can come in the shape of a fruit too. One of the most common body types, mostly for women, is the pear shape.
Pear shapes are characterised by having wider hips and bottom than our shoulders and bust. You are pear-shaped if you have a slimmer upper body and tend to carry more weight around your hips and lower half.
Apart from being a very common body type, we must be confident that we have beautiful curves. Please note, however, that your body shape has little to do with your body size and weight.
Regardless of whether you are a size 6 or 24, you will still have a pear-shaped body. There is nothing we can do about it since our bone structure dictates our frame. Although there is no way for us to change our basic shape, you can learn to balance your beautiful self and dress to your advantage.
What Causes a Pear-Shaped Body?
Before we dive even deeper, do note that we are not medical professionals, and what we share here are just general guidelines to provide information and knowledge, and to inspire us to love our beautiful, curvy selves. So, ladies, #loveyourcurves.
Women tend to be pear-shaped, with fat concentrated more on the hips, thighs, and buttocks. These areas are stubbornly resistant to exercise and healthy eating.
Some elements of our body type are determined by our bone structure. For example, some people have curvier, rounder buttocks and curvature in their spine. It is not uncommon for some people to have wider hips, shorter legs, or longer torsos than others. Your height can also affect the overall shape of your body.
Genetics also play a role in causing women to have a pear-shaped body. Our genes determine how our bodies accumulate and store fat. In our case, fat tends to concentrate in our hips, thighs, and behinds.
It is important to remember that a lot of what determines our body shape is set in stone by four factors:
- Our bone structures.
- Our genetics.
- The secretion of our hormones.
- And our overall build.
A deeper understanding of how we pear-shaped women are put together translates to a healthy acceptance and embracing of our body type. And a more positive outlook ultimately leads to a healthier, more empowered life.
Another plus of embracing your curves is that it makes it much easier to find clothing that will flatter your figure. Pear Collections has the expertise to determine your pear type and can advise on what will suit your body best.
Do celebrate your curves, and remember, we can get curvy pear-shaped women superbly wrapped.
It’s Good to Balance that Pear.
Pear-shaped bodies have several advantages, even with a little extra “stored energy” in our hips, thighs, and buttocks.
There are positives, too, for us pear-shaped women:
- We have beautifully feminine, curvaceous hips and bottoms.
- Most of us have slender upper bodies with an elegant neck.
- We have a well-defined and neat waistline
- It’s the most common and popular shape.
If you want inspiration for a well-balanced pear-shaped woman, look at Ashley Graham. She has a typical pear-shaped body. Designers use her curvaceous shape to the best advantage, showcasing their designs.
That’s what we at Pear Collections aim to do for you. You are already beautiful as you are, now let’s enhance it some more with clothes that fit your shape and take advantage of balancing the overall look of your shoulders and hips to create that perfect looking figure.
