Our body shape says quite a bit about our physical health. However, do keep in mind that body shape is just one factor that may determine our overall health. Regardless of our shape and size, we can be healthy. Or it can also be an indicator if we are at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart disease.
But before we delve in deeper with this blog, we here at Pear Collections does not claim to be health or medical professionals. What we share here are based on informative research which we aim to share with you. We, however, encourage you to seek the opinions of medical and health professionals if you are worried about your body type or health.

What causes my pear-shaped body?
Our bodies have its own way of distributing its own fats. Pear-shaped women are identified as having smaller waist and having extra weight and fat in the hips, thighs, and bottom.
Pear-shaped folks are often women, thanks to the effects of the hormone estrogen. Estrogen, for example, leads the body to store fat in the lower portion of our bodies.
Other factors that determine a person’s body shape are also dictated by their own skeletal frame, bone structure, and genetic predisposition. Additionally, our genes determine how our bodies accumulates and store fat.
To cite examples, your bone structure, frame size, where your body tend to hold fat, and your metabolism are generally determined by your genetics. Whatever it is you do with your body type and what happens to it is entirely up to the healthy choices you make.
Regardless of the body shape you have, just remember that: You are beautiful. There is no such thing as the perfect body shape, regardless of what others and the media may tell you.
The most important thing to have in mind is to stay happy and maintain being physically healthy. If you have concerns about your body, including the way it moves or how you feel, it is advisable to always talk to a healthcare provider or a doctor.
Is it healthy to have a pear-shaped body?
Regardless of body type and shape, we all have the propensity to have an overaccumulation of fat. For women, being pear-shaped is better because it shows that our bodies can store fat to fulfil nutritional requirements needed before and during pregnancy.
According to Dr. Tsvetelina Velikova, MD, PhD, people who carry fat in their bottoms and hips, with less fat in the shoulders and bust are considered pear-shaped. She also stated that being pear-shaped is safer since fat stored in our legs has little potential of reaching vital organs.
Pear-shaped women are considered far healthier than other body types due to fat distribution and concentration in the lower abdomen. This, however, does not mean that this body type is automatically free of risk from disease. This is because most degenerative diseases have various risk factors, mainly due to lifestyle choices.
You can still be at risk for cardiovascular diseases and other risk factors if you smoke, drink alcohol to an excess, make unhealthy food choices and/or overindulge. Regardless of if you’re pear-shaped or not, adopting a healthy lifestyle is necessary to prevent various degenerative diseases.
Although the benefits of having a pear-shaped body are still being debated, the pear-shaped body type is generally considered healthier, according to Harvard Health Publishing.
These fat cells, called gluteofemoral adipose tissues, absorb detrimental fatty acids that one obtains from ingested foods and removing them from your bloodstream. They are also responsible for producing beneficial chemicals for your body, like leptin and adiponectin.
Pear-shaped women naturally have larger thighs. You would be glad to know that according to a study published in the British Medical Journal found that women (including men) larger thighs have additional protection against heart disease and premature death.
Although our fat concentration in our lower extremities places us at a lower risk of acquiring serious diseases, do note that as pear-shaped people are immune to disease.
