I hear some women complaining about being compared to a piece of fruit. Point well taken, and to be honest I used to be one of them. I used to loathe being compared to a pear because I subconsciously had negative connotations attached to the word – something I think many of us do.
However, as I’ve become older (and like to think wiser) I think the term pear-shaped describes my body pretty well and I defiantly prefer it to being called a triangle.
The fact of the matter is, that pears are curvaceously shaped, healthy, versatile and juicy – I for one don’t mind being compared to that!
Pear-shaped women are also in good company with some of the most beautiful women in the world being a part of our community. These stars have embraced their “pearness” and even used it to help their careers, yes that’s right I’m referring to women such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Kirsten Davis, Alicia Keyes, Kim Kardashian, and Shakira; to name a few. These women are considered to be our modern-day beauty stars and show we should all be proud to be pear!
Fun Fact of the Day
Studies have found that men like women with curves and have done so since prehistoric times. Studies suggest that the structure of a female hominid made her posture subject to a forward shift during pregnancies. Essentially, a curve of the lower back would enable women to support and carry out multiple pregnancies – thus arousing the male hominid.
With that said, categorizing and labeling women into specific fruit or geometric shapes can be quite demeaning and can objectify women in one of the most personal way possible; attacking our bodies. This feeling of objectification tends to increase body-shaming and is often linked to depression and eating disorders.
It is my personal opinion that these labels are a help to assist in the understanding of our overall health, fitness and yes styling needs; however, increasing social pressures and body shaming has made all of us women believe that our designated “Fruit Shape” as a negative.
From today onward, I would like all of us to discard this belief as I offer an alternative concept.
Being labeled a fruit; whether it be a pear, apple, banana etc. is a complement. Not only is fruit delicious but it’s necessary for life. A fruit, of any kind, is able to adapt, change and nurture itself to create an end result that nourishes others, is beautiful to look at and has the means to reproduce. Really, fruits are amazing as are women.
We all come in all different shapes and sizes and that’s what makes us beautiful. Let’s work together to change the perception and be proud to say “I Am A Pear!”
